Blood Flow Restriction Alters Motor Unit Behavior During Resistance Exercise.

2019

AbstractWe aimed to determine whether blood flow restriction (BFR) alters the characteristics of individual motor units during low-intensity (LI) exercise. Eight men (26.0±3.8 yrs) performed 5 sets of 15 knee extensions at 20% of one-repetition maximum (with and without BFR). Maximal isometric voluntary contractions (MVC) were performed before and after exercise to quantify force decrement. Submaximal isometric voluntary contractions were additionally performed for 18 s, matching trapezoidal target-force trajectories at 40% pre-MVC. EMG activity was recorded from the vastus lateralis muscle. Then, signals were decomposed to extract motor unit recruitment threshold, firing rates and action p…

Heated breathing tubes affect humidity output of circle absorber systems.

1993

Abstract Study Objective: To verify whether the airway climate in circle systems can be improved with heated breathing tubes. Design: Randomized, controlled, prospective clinical study. Setting: Operating theater of the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery. Patients: 26 adult patients undergoing prolonged anesthesia. Interventions: A total of 26 prolonged anesthetics were conducted in adult patients using a minimal fresh gas flow rate (0.6 L/min) and silicon breathing tubes (16 mm internal diameter) containing a heated coil. Group 1 ( n = 10 patients) was the control group; breathing tubes were unheated. In Group 2 ( n = 10 patients), breathing tubes were heated to 30°C. In Group 3 ( n = 6 p…

Comparison of Lateral Abdominal Musculature Activation during Expiration with an Expiratory Flow Control Device Versus the Abdominal Drawing-in Maneu…

2020

Background and Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to quantify and compare lateral abdominal musculature thickness, including the transverse abdominis (TrA), internal oblique (IO), and external oblique (EO) muscles, via rehabilitative ultrasound imaging (RUSI) during the use of the expiratory flow control device (EFCD) versus the classic abdominal drawing-in maneuver (ADIM). Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional observational pilot study. Twenty-one women were recruited and assessed the thickness of each muscle (TrA, IO, and EO) by ultrasound imaging at rest, during the ADIM, and during expiration with the EFCD. Waist circumference was also measured under the same circumstan…

Pseudonyms for Cancer Registries

1996

AbstractIn order to conform to the rigid German legislation on data privacy and security we developed a new concept of data flow and data storage for population-based cancer registries. A special trusted office generates a pseudonym for each case by a cryptographic procedure. This office also handles the notification of cases and communicates with the reporting physicians. It passes pseudonymous records to the registration office for permanent storage. The registration office links the records according to the pseudonyms. Starting from a requirements analysis we show how to construct the pseudonyms; we then show that they meet the requirements. We discuss how the pseudonyms have to be prote…

Practical strategies for stable operation of HFF-QCM in continuous air flow

2013

Currently there are a few fields of application using quartz crystal microbalances (QCM). Because of environmental conditions and insufficient resolution of the microbalance, chemical sensing of volatile organic compounds in an open system was as yet not possible. In this study we present strategies on how to use 195 MHz fundamental quartz resonators for a mobile sensor platform to detect airborne analytes. Commonly the use of devices with a resonant frequency of about 10 MHz is standard. By increasing the frequency to 195 MHz the frequency shift increases by a factor of almost 400. Unfortunately, such kinds of quartz crystals tend to exhibit some challenges to obtain a reasonable signal-to…

The Catalonian Conflict : an Interpretive Structural Model

2019

The methodology ISM (Interpretive Structural Modeling) is used to study the conflict in Catalonia, listing a list of factors and the influences between them, building from them the Matrix of Influences and the Matrix of Scope, from which they classify the factors into levels and a flow diagram is drawn up, concluding what the possible paths of evolution of said conflict would be

Influence of the electro-optical properties of an a-Si:H single layer on the performances of a pin solar cell

2012

We analyze the results of an extensive characterization study involving electrical and optical measurements carried out on hydrogenated amorphous silicon (α-Si:H) thin film materials fabricated under a wide range of deposition conditions. By adjusting the synthesis parameters, we evidenced how conductivity, activation energy, electrical transport and optical absorption of an α-Si:H layer can be modified and optimized. We analyzed the activation energy and the pre-exponential factor of the dark conductivity by varying the dopant-to-silane gas flow ratio. Optical measurements allowed to extract the absorption spectra and the optical bandgap. Additionally, we report on the temperature dependen…

Determination of the Herbicide Fluometuron by Photo‐induced Chemiluminescence in a Continuous‐flow Multicommutation Assembly

2007

Abstract This study was dealing with the chemiluminometric determination of the selective herbicide Fluometuron or 1,1‐dimethyl‐3‐(α,α,α‐trifluoro‐m‐tolyl)urea, (C10H11F3N2O) with a molecular weight 232.29 belongs to the phenyl urea herbicides family. The analytical strategy is based on the continuous‐flow manifold, multicommutation and the analyte pre‐treatment, the photo‐degradation. The optimization of chemical (pH, medium, temperature, and organized media) and hydrodynamic parameters (volume of reagents and flow rate) was performed by univariant and multiparametric simplex procedure respectively. Analytical figures of merit and the effect of foreign substances were studied. The method r…

Determination of the herbicide benfuresate by its photo-induced chemiluminescence using flow multicommutation methodology.

2007

The present paper deals with an analytical strategy based on coupling photo-induced chemiluminescence in a multicommutation continuous-flow methodology for the determination of the herbicide benfuresate. The solenoid valve inserted as small segments of the analyte solution was sequentially alternated with segments of the NaOH solution for adjusting the medium for the photodegradation. Both flow rates (sample and medium) were adjusted to required time for photodegradation, 90 s; and then, the resulting solution was also sequentially inserted as segments alternated with segments of the oxidizing solution system, hexacyanoferrate (III) in alkaline medium. The calibration range from 1 microg L(…

Reactor model for fast reactions in the micro-bubble column and validation

2007

A simple reactor model for predicting conversions in a micro-bubble column is described. It assumes fast reactions so that the gaseous component is readily consumed at the gas-liquid interface. Then, gas-liquid mass transfer becomes determining. As input parameters for the model, the hydrodynamics, specific interfacial area, and mass transport need to be described. Two fast model reactions, the catalytic oxidation of butyraldehyde and the absorption of CO2 in aqueous NaOH, show the applicability of the model but also its limits. The model was used for predicting reaction performance in dependence of operating conditions, in particular to get maximum conversion with the antagonistic paramete…
